CiD Help is a Malware and Adware. You could get this Malware if you download a software from some un-trusted web sites.

CiD Help will hijack your Internet Explorer and give you annoying popup windows every few minutes.

You can not stop CiD Help (cid.exe process) from Windows Task Manager.

As of March 4, 2007, none of anti-Adware and anti-Spyware softeware, including Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, AVG anti-Spyware can remove CiD Help.

However, you can remove this piece of junk from your computer as following:

1, To remove CiD Help, go to Start–>Settings–>Control Panel–> Add and Remove Programs, then select CiD Help, click remove.

2, Open IE (IE7, this example), go to Tools–>Intenet Options–> General tab–>Browser history–>Delete–>Temporary Internet Files–>Delete.

3, Open “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data” folder, search for folders have exe extension file. Delete the folder

4, Use your Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc, use a text editor to remove the following entries from the hosts file:

I don’t have the CID-program in the list.
    And no other suspicious program

    found an unremovable map :
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spamjugsarmywipe
regarding another forum, this can only be removed when starting in safe mode.
    (to be done)

In the mean time I stopped the message boxes by clearing the exeption list for the popup filter from IE7

Yeah, I removed the program but none of the mentioned enries are in the host file. Thank you.

But any idea how I might have got this adware? Could it be LimeWire?

  6. PhDs said,

    March 13, 2007 @ 7:49 am

I know you can get CiD popup from files downloaded by file sharing programs such as Azureus, eMule, Limewire

  7. Meshugge said,

    March 13, 2007 @ 11:37 am

    OK.
Took off the CID Help program.
Took out the entries from the HOST file.

Still getting the obnoxious popups! You’re right that the current spam/ad blockers don’t seem to be stopping this bugger at all.

    Any other suggestions?

In your IE , Go to Extra / Popup-blocking / settings

    federick,

I just put “host file windows 98″ in the search-field at Google,
and the following link learned me that the hosts-file for 98 is located directly in \Windows

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win98/reskit/part7/wrkappf.mspx?mfr=true

  15. Meshugge said,

    March 14, 2007 @ 5:02 pm

I did delete all accepted websites from my popup blocker … and also rebooted my computer. All was quite for about an hour and then another CID popup. It’s slowed down quite a bit, however! Nasty little booger! Host file looks clean. No CID Help program to remove. Is this a new type of virus that is going around?

    Did you check your \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ ?
Do you have any suspicious map there with only one or two executables in ?

  17. Meshugge said,

    March 14, 2007 @ 5:26 pm

Odd file that I see on the add/remove control list include “my way search assistant”, which does not have any information with this file (no “change/remove” button”, or any information on use frequency. In looking at the Program Files, I don’t see any listing for My Way.

In C:\DocumentsandSettings\AllUsers\ApplicationData, there is an odd file called ChicBiasViewDate, which has a single exe file called ante surf.exe

Any of these look odd to you?

  18. Bart said,

    March 14, 2007 @ 5:49 pm

    Meshugge

Google on “ante surf.exe” tells me that we have the source of the problem :

    http://www.superadblocker.com/spywarelop.html

this one learns me that it is not new
    http://www.informationsarchiv.net/themenarchiv/4/1/1468

    also this seems similar:
    http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/A/ACEAIM.EXE-5446.html

I gues that you can’t delete the executable.
You will have reboot in “safe mode”.
Then you can delete the complete map.
After normal reboot you should be freed.

    March 14, 2007 @ 5:54 pm

First of all I deleted all CiD entries from C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host.file (Open with WordPad) and BTW I use IE7.
In IE\Tools\Internet Options\Programs, make sure that HTML Editor is Microsoft Word if U use MS Office.
    In IE\Tools\Internet Options\Privacy\Settings, remove all.
And finally, thanks to Google, I went to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data and found this suspicious folder wich name I forgot and I had to login Safe Mode to delete it. This folder contained one .exe file. (You must

    Badabim ….Badaboom!
    Problem solved ;)

  20. Bart said,

    March 15, 2007 @ 1:27 pm

    Hi Meshugge,

Seems that my last post has been removed.
Try to remove the ChicBiasViewDate map.
I guess that you won’t be able to.
Reboot in safe-mode and delete it.
    This should solve your problem.

The entrie in the hosts-file are only put there to disable all the popupblockers.
It is necessary to remove them, but this won’t stop the Adware.

I too had this little bugger drive me crazy. I can tell you I got it from downloading and partial install of Warez.com filesharing P2P. A program that’s on Download.com and others that prides itself on NOT being infested with spyware ad the such…Ha, not the case at all.

Anyway, I simply removed the CiD program (which I seemed to never see) in my programs file and checked my host file and it was clean. Haven’t had it back since. I aborted the install of Warez P2P when I got a damn DriveCleaner pop up. I knew something was up seeing this pop up….had that bugger last year and had to do a restore of system after getting that one to go away. Constantly wanting you to buy the drive cleaner program to clean your system…

    Thanks for the info..

These new Cid popups are very annoying… ive gone to the “application data” folder and i found a strange folder called “mealspamjoywait” with three .exe files in it. I deleted two of them but the third one”ShimMeta.exe” cant be deleted because it is used by another file. The wierd part about this file is it is in my Taskmanager under processes for about 15 seconds after startup, and gives and error message about this program everytime i restart/shutdown my computer.
Any ideas or suggestions on how to get rid of this file or the CiD popups?

If you can’t see application data go to: start-my computer-on the menu bar go tools-folder option-on the folder option menu bar go view-under the ‘hiddn files and folders’ select show hidden files and unselect hide protect operating system files (if selected), then you will be able to find application data.

ok i know that they have updated thier malware but i found the solution

follow the instructions as listed above

open the “hosts” with notepad (dont think it matters but it woorked for me

delete the ONE that has a start of “127.0.0.1″

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

look for a folder that is called “Azureus”

    delete the whole folder

    DONE!

    isn’t that easier!!!

Just did this so it may be a quick fix but ill let you know if they come back

CiD Help is usually bundled with other programs that you may install. I was using PC Tools Spyware Doctor however it could not remove it. I got this malware from WinZix (it was part of the damn install) but successfully removed now. thanks for the tips above :)

Azureus is a P2P program, and you got CiD by downloading another program which contains CiD using Azureus

Are you saying to look for folders whose name includes .exe? Or are we supposed to look in those folders for files with .exe extensions? thanks a bunch for the help. just a word of advice though, if you have different usernames for different people, check their folders under C:\Documents and Settings. the folder associated with cid help on my computer was ONLY in the folder with my username. it wasn’t present under my wife’s username, or under “all users” or “default user”. it seems everyone gets a different folder but it also seems they all have wierd names. mine was CDROMJOYFORD and contained uploadidolwindow.exe and SEEKGLUE.exe. i didn’t have to start in safe mode to delete anything, but my account has administrator level access, so maybe that has something to do with it. also, if it won’t let you delete the folder, open task manager, click on the processes tab, and the kill the process bearing the name of the .exe in the oddly named folder. maybe that will let you delete it, since the program will no longer be in use by windows. not all of these suggestions have been tested since my removal went perfectly smooth, but i figured i’d throw them out there in case they help. if they don’t, sorry :(

ok..dont panic its very easy..just do what it says on top of this page. i am making clarification where some of you make mistakes:

    when you go to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc, you should go to a file named “hosts” with no extension. right click and choose to “open with” and select TXT editor. then delet everything in the list that has a CDI in that line.
    close and save it.

if you dont see the EXE file in step 2 this could be for two reasons: 1. the version of this crap that infested you doesn’t even leave an exe file in Application data. whatTHE IDIOT WHO WROTE THE TOP GUIDE means : GO TO APPLICATION DATA FOLDER, AND IF THERE IS ANY FOLDERS WITH THE CDI NAME IN IT THAT HAS A CDI EXE FILE, DELET IT. THESE MORONS WRITING TECH SUPPORT..ANYWAY…

so if you dont have it, try thr step 3 and reboot. if no more adds, dont come back here!

if still you get adds, have to install the damn thing (3wplayer), do this thing properly again and then reboot. (this means maybe when you uninstalled it something went wrong).
3, Open “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data” folder, search for folders have exe extension file. Delete the folder

BUT THE PROMBLEM IS THAT IT SAYS IT CANNOT BE DELETED!!! :(

it says its in use ?!
    but im not using it

The application data folder is a hidden folder, to show a hidden folder you need to open any folder and
selct tools on the top row followed by folder options, then scrool down and select ‘ Hidden Files and Folders ‘ - show hidden files and folders. This program seems to load with windows so you will probably need to start in safe mode to delete it. The one on my computer was in a folder called Frag Bend Logo, hope this helps.

Well, if u can’t see the files, open control panel, and find appearance and personalization, click show hidden files and folers, click bubble that says show hidden flies and filders, uncheck boxes that say hide hidden files/system files.

Something that should work for everyone is, open your anti-virus, and block all IP adresses of IE. Then u won’t get any more CID but u can’t use IE. Just download firefox then.

I’ve had this problem a couple of times.
It also comes courtesy of the new Windows messenger although you can uninstall it via the add or remove programs it still decided to stay on my computer.
Go Here http://cidhelp.com/ and scroll down the page to step 4 theres a universal uninstaller just click the link if you have Norton disable it first before clicking the link works a treat no more CID!

  161. Polaris431 said,

    June 17, 2008 @ 1:26 pm

I am using Windows XP. The version of Cid I had on my computer was generating a random directory under “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data” and probably a random filename. This .exe will probably change everytime you boot your computer. The application is set to boot by an entry in the Registry:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Check the names of the exes under this node and find the one that is located in the Application Directory. Delete the entry in the Registry. To be safe, don’t reboot your computer or shut it down. Do a hardware reset or turn off the power. This will prevent the Cid exe from getting notified of a shutdown and creating yet another random startup .exe.

If you’re using some other version of Windows, you need to find out where the file is getting randomly created. Use a disk compare program that shows changes between reboots in order to find the file. In any case, the entry in the Registry needs to be removed.

If you can’t be bothered with this, just export the entire keys under the above Registry entry and save them to a file. Then delete all of the entries, close the Registry, then kill the power or do a hard reset. If Cid is gone after starting Windows, just add the Registry entries you’ve exported one at a time and reboot each time to find out which one was the bad one.
